Built in the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset, the Mess Hut at Great Wood Camp provides this charity with a practical yet beautiful building that is the focal point for this venue.
Although the frame for the Mess Hut is a simple king post truss with 4-bays, its height and width give it the familiarity of a church or school hall. This is perfect for its intended use and allows the diverse space to be used for different functions as required. It is airy and light, and by using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) it is also energy efficient.
We entered and won the tender for this project in partnership with Glosfords, who engineered and applied the SIPs for the Mess Hut, and this was another great project to work with them on.
We were on site for a week to raise the frame and returned to add the separate porches and veranda which we’d also been commissioned to create. The Mess Hut was opened in 2018 and received praise for how well it suits its surroundings, the craftsmanship used to build it and the beautiful oak it is built with, going on to win various awards.
