Garden Rooms
Sunrooms, Orangeries and Conservatories
Our oak garden room extensions bring light and beautiful views into your home, and can seamlessly connect your living spaces with the natural world outside. Designed to stay warm in winter and cool in summer, they offer comfort year-round, all within a beautifully crafted oak frame.

How do these spaces differ and what can they add to your home?
Conservatories
What exactly is a Conservatory? According to the Building Regulations, all conservatories must:
- Have glazed walls
- Have a glazed roof
- Have a door separating the conservatory from the rest of your home
- Not be connected to the main heating system of your home
Conservatories are therefore intended to create wonderful light filled spaces, from which to enjoy your garden.
If this is what you are looking for, then Carpenter Oak are here to help, and this page includes examples of some beautiful conservatories which we have built overlooking beautiful gardens.
However, conservatories are not intended to form the main spaces of your home, such as your kitchen or living room, because their glazed roofs will often cause these spaces to get too hot in the summer, and too cold in the winter.
Garden Rooms or Sunrooms
Our garden rooms are extensions with almost entirely glazed walls, however, unlike a conservatory, they include a solid pitched roof, with a finish such as tiles or slate.
In summer, the roof blocks excess heat, keeping the space cool, while in winter, its insulation retains warmth.
This means that unlike conservatories, our garden rooms truly extend the size of your home all year round, and these spaces can be used as key parts of your home, such as your main living room or even your kitchen.
Your garden room can therefore create a seamless extension to your home. It does not need a separating door, and it can be heated along with the rest of your home, for example with underfloor heating.
Unlike Conservatories, our Garden Rooms meet Building Control standards for insulation, comparable to brick-built extensions. High-performance glazing and insulation ensure comfort in all seasons. While they don’t have fully glazed roofs, optional rooflights add extra natural light.
Orangeries
Orangeries originated in the 18th century as greenhouses for growing fruit trees. Today we recognise Orangeries for their distinctive glazed ‘Lanterns’ which tend to sit above a flat or mansard roof.
Like our pitched roofed Garden Rooms, the glazed walls of an Orangery, together with their partially glazed roof, provide stunning views to the natural world, whilst keeping the heat out in summer, and the warmth in during the winter.
Do I need Planning Permission for my Garden Room?
Many building projects such as Garden Rooms may not require Planning Permission.
Read our ‘Planning and Building Regulations’ page for some more background information on planning.
The specific rules regarding Garden Rooms are the same as those surrounding other extensions and Conservatories. See our Extension page for more details.
