The extension to Radley College Chapel, in Oxfordshire, has received the top regional award from RIBA, winning the RIBA South Building of the Year Award 2023 and the Regional Conservation Award.
The extension for this historic building was undertaken by Purcell Architects in 2020 as the private school’s growing number of pupils meant they required more space for their chapel.
Carpenter Oak designed and built the complex octagonal roof structure, with the help of Rhys Brooks of Harrison Brookes Architects to develop the geometrical principles for the project.
Given the intricacy of this structure we assembled the frame in full at our yard before it was transported to site in Oxford and raised to its centrepiece position in the chapel.
