A Japanese inspired boathouse on the River Cam

Features: Using intricate jointing methods dispenses with the need for any metal screws or nails in the frame

Constraints: To be built as sustainably as possible, timber sourced from the UK, no mechanical fixings

Designed using traditional joinery techniques, using no mechanical fixings

Clients Poppy and Joel Gustafen own a Grade II listed house in Cambridgeshire with a garden that meets the River Cam. They wanted to build a boathouse that would be as sustainable as possible, whilst being beautiful and practical.

Carpenter Oak were engaged to provide technical design support, fabrication and installation supervision on this traditional boat house built using Devon larch. The project was inspired by authentic Japanese timber jointing.
