Interview with Tom

  • What is the most embarrassing job you have ever had?

  • A one-off three-hour farm job, entering a barn, gathering six chickens in each hand, pausing briefly while they were all injected with vaccines, then loading them onto a lorry.
  • Favourite thing about working at Carpenter Oak?

  • I love anything to do with wood and being creative, so to be able to combine both of these passions and be part of a team that produces such a beautiful end product is incredibly rewarding.
  • What music are you listening to?

  • The Stone Roses. If I can bear to listen to anything else: Pink Floyd, Bear's Den, The Allman Brothers, Joy Division, Bloc Party, Deerhunter.
  • When not in the yard, what do you enjoy doing?

  • I wouldn’t call myself a carpenter, but I carve wooden signs and make various chunky things out of wood, which I’ve done for as long as I can remember. If I’m not in my workshop you’ll find me on my boat, skiing or listening to Test Match Special.

I’ve been aware of Carpenter Oak pretty much since it began, having grown up locally and done odd jobs here over the years, as well as being kept up to date by my Mum, who’s worked here for over twenty years.  I had two amazing summer seasons in Greece and a winter season in Zermatt, Switzerland, before I eventually made my way to London.  I worked in the ski industry for five years, working in a digital team and getting to film overseas and produce video content.  Whilst in that job, I also met my future wife, Erica.  We got married down by the river Dart in 2015.
