Interview with Liam

  • What is your favourite thing about working at Carpenter Oak?

  • The broad spectrum of styles, the size and the quality of the frames we create is a great thing to be a part of. Every project is unique which is great for a designer. There is such a wealth of knowledge and experience at the company, it's a great place to build on my framing knowledge and work towards gaining my chartership in Architectural Technology. On a personal level, the company is very people focused, creating a very enjoyable, supportive and fun place to work. There is also the bike ride to work, a great way to start the working day - when I'm not being lazy.
  • When not in the yard what do you enjoy doing?

  • Spending time with friends and family, cooking tasty food, getting on my bike to nice places, listening to and finding new music and going to the pub.
  • What is the best project you've worked on so far?

  • Currently, a small project called Osborne. I attended a client meeting on my first day and ended up designing the project. The site had a lot of constraints so it was satisfying to develop a design that worked around them all.
  • What music are you currently listening to?

  • Anything I can get my hands/ears on! Which recently includes a John Mayal record, Tumble Audio from Nottingham and all the new tracks Aphex has just put out.

I grew up in the West Midlands, in the beautiful county of Shropshire. I then went and studied and lived in Bristol for a very enjoyable 9 years. I graduated just as the recession hit, which made getting an architectural job a bit of a challenge. I was lucky enough to find an internship that got me involved in timber framing and I've been working in the industry ever since. I worked for a timber framing company north of Bristol for a few years, was self-employed for a brief period and made the move out of the workshop into frame design with Carpenter Oak. Now my partner and I are happily settled (it took a bit of adjustment from Bristol) into Devon, enjoying coastal walks, country bike rides and eating fish and chips with questionable curry sauce - you can't win them all!
