Carpenter Oak’s Open House events have proved to be extremely popular over the last few years, with 2018 being our busiest yet!
This March, we’ll be lake-side at a newly completed, contemporary family home, featuring an open plan living area, framed in oak with steel junctions.
The house, owned by Clive and Melanie Paul, is in an unusual location, nestling below the embankment of the M1, south of Milton Keynes, and replaced a dilapidated existing structure.
It is a single storey, cruciform shaped low lying structure with timber cladding and a green roof. Four bedrooms are spread along a corridor off from the main living area, which features a raised entrance, dining and living area, with a kitchen and utility room off to the shorter, east wing.
The house makes the most of the views across the lake, part of the existing fishery business run by the owners. To allow for these views, the frame had to break from traditional structures and incorporate steel flitch plates and bolts, a hidden steel ridge beam and plywood sheathing in the wall.
This allowed the frame to provide the structural support without the need for traditional braces and ties, creating the uninterrupted and uncluttered space the clients wanted.
At the open house event, you will meet the owners, Adam, Will, Alex and Laura, from Carpenter Oak and be able to see the oak frame up close and experience the space made possible by the challenging design.
