Jane had recently become semi-retired and was looking to make a move from her existing property. Having used her existing property for summer lettings Jane wanted to move away from this and focus on caring for her animals. This was the beginning of her journey to build a barn inspired home.
Jane’s son in law suggested building a home in the grounds of the existing property. Moving onto an estate was not an option for Jane and her animals.
It was on a dull and rainy day that Jane was browsing Carpenter Oak’s website and was inspired to pick up the phone and book a visit to our Show Barn that very day.
“I was looking at the Show Barn on that rainy day and thought, this is exactly what I was wanting to do, and I just went for it.”
Jane Holt, Owner
Set in a valley, Jane enjoys beautiful and atmospheric views across the rolling hills. Tucked away from the outside world, this idyllic, reclusive location is also home to Jane’s goats, geese and chickens, just 11 miles from our Devon Yard.
The 1 ½ storey barn style building consists of two bedrooms, with a third located on the mezzanine. There is an open plan living area of lounge and kitchen. The stunning views can be appreciated throughout the year through the full height indirect glazing. The lean to houses the second bedroom, utility room, entrance and covered porch.
Our Carpenters put on a big push in the workshop to get the frame cut in 2 ½ weeks. The frame took 3 days to erect on site. The team were fortunate to have the sun shining, resulting in an enjoyable and successful erection of the frame.
Access to the site was tricky, but the team are used to access issues, so donned their fluorescent jackets before shepherding in the timber delivery and crane.
The site also caused a few difficulties in terms of erecting the frame and the crane had to be placed below the property in order to lift the timber into place.
Jane wasn’t daunted at the prospect of carrying out the build on her own. Helped by her trustworthy and reliable builder - Nick Robinson of Oakley Builders - and the team at Carpenter Oak, Jane found it to be an enjoyable experience.
Jane’s total build, including planning and architects fees came in at around £300,000
