We have experienced carpenters dedicated purely to designing and creating your timber frame in Scotland, working alongside Scotland based architect Peter Smith from Roderick James Architects, to provide your expert team in timber framing.
Over the past 15 years Carpenter Oak has been creating beautiful timber frame buildings across Scotland, from intimate wooden cabins, to modest lean-to conservatories, to large scale public buildings, and virtually everything in between!
The Scotland yard consists of a workshop and a small team of up to 4 carpenters, meaning your Carpenter Oak frame can be created locally to you with the same exceptional quality and reasonable prices we provide clients across the UK and worldwide.
“Working closely together Carpenter Oak, Roderick James Architects and a high quality local contractor (A A MacDonald) delivered our dream West Highland home on time and within budget. We couldn’t have had a less stressful or more creative client experience.”
Established in 1974, RJA LLP works from locations in Glasgow, London and Devon, and has set up an office in Morvern. The practice specialises in contemporary architecture with a particular emphasis on space and light.
They’re especially known for their close association with Carpenter Oak, and the design of timber frame buildings. They work nationwide, and have worked in the Channel Islands, Ireland, France, USA, South Africa and the Caribbean.
With their experience of designing several hundred individual houses, they’ve developed a language and style of structure more subtle than it first appears, giving their buildings a comfortable contemporary feel.
After studying architecture in Glasgow, Peter moved to Germany and completed an apprenticeship as a joiner, working on traditional style Bavarian houses. He later joined RJA in 2010 to look after the Achabeag Development and to help build up the Scotland office. They now have jobs all over the country and hope to expand further in the coming years."One day I will build my own oak framed house, until then I’ll keep making furniture in my workshop - whenever I get the chance…"
Favourite thing about working here? Seeing clients get excited.
Best project you have worked on and why? Probably the Achabeag Affordables because we pulled off the impossible.
Who you/others think you look like? Robert Redford / Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
When not in the yard what do you enjoy doing? Cycling, making stuff, going on adventures with my kids.
If stranded on a dessert island which three colleagues would you take and why? No-one, I’d enjoy the peace and quiet.
All that we do is bespoke, custom built, from a clean sheet of paper. It’s your project. If you are going to embark on a self build project, no matter how big or small, we believe you should get exactly what you want. Why compromise?
The key to this, at least to start with, is all in the design. Commissioning our professional design services will ultimately save you time and money to produce beautiful distinctive architecture unique to you and for your family to enjoy for many years to come.
You can see exactly what the building is made of, how it stands, and how it will stand for generations to come, way beyond the time spent in it by those that had the original vision to commission the frame.
Furthermore, a Carpenter Oak frame will certainly add value, enriching the asset which is your home.
But we’re possibly getting ahead of ourselves. From either quite basic information (sketches, scrapbook of ideas, key dimensions) provided by you, and/or by relating to case studies from our extensive, wide ranging, portfolio, we can at the very least help with budget guide prices and inspiring/practical advice. It’s a process that evolves in stages and we have a wealth of knowledge built up over many years that we can share along the way.
To help you get the ball rolling, we need to hear from you. Introduce us to your project and brief us on your ideas, needs, and aims/aspirations for the build and we will help you with the next step. So contact us today on 01575 598234 or online to get your timber framed project off the ground!
