A true testament to the diversity enabled when building with an oak frame, Build It magazine have featured two contrasting Carpenter Oak self-build homes.

In October’s issue, David and Jenny Spillane’s recently completed modern oak framed home took front-page status; wowing readers with a never-before-seen use of oak as a building material.

So original is this build, that it won ‘Best Oak Frame’ last month at the Build It Awards 2015 in recognition of Roderick James Architects and Carpenter Oak’s design, innovation, and efficiency.

“This house shows huge imagination and an innate understanding of the materials” commented the judges; “Roderick James Architects and Carpenter Oak have celebrated the oak-and-steel structure by putting it at the heart of a wonderful self-build home”

Our clients are often surprised at what can be done with the mighty oak as a modern building material, but we always maintain that anything that you can imagine is possible. Read more about the Spillane’s modern oak home or check out some other timber framed houses for inspiration.

As if that wasn’t enough, in December’s issue (just out in the shops) you can read about Darren Findlow and Anthony Higham’s newly completed “light filled haven”. This home features the traditional mortice and tenon joinery secured with oak pegs, as well as the light and airy open plan spaces associated with contemporary wooden framed buildings.
